My name is Janken Kusanagi, and I was born in Edo, (modernly known as Tokyo) Japan to Noriko(mother) and Shin(father) Kusanagi, whom I lived with until I reached the age of sixteen. By this time, my father had been dead for a year, and my mother's health fading rapidly, she told me, that if I were to grow to be strong, that I would have to leave home, and start making my own way, heeding her words, I told her one last time that I loved her, and left home.

I wandered Japan for about a year it would seem, living on the mushrooms which my father taught me were safe to eat, as well as trapping animals for food when I could. When my mother had said it was time to leave and make my own way, I was sure she did not mean wandering around, surviving each day as if I were some animal with no sense of direction. One day, utterly saddened by the animal I thought I had become, I sat against a tree and began to weep, not being able to understand my purpose in this lifetime, and what my mother would think of me had she seen how I was "making my own way".

Hearing my cries, an old man had tapped my shoulder asking me what was the matter, his smile was so soft, and his voice, so calming that I instantly began to tell the man my entire life's events, as well as introduce myself to him. He, in turn, introduced himself as Shuten Yamauchi and told me that though he was there to get medicinal herbs, he would not mind taking me in, and invited me to live with him, saying that he could use a youth in his home to help keep things orderly.

Overjoyed at finally having a place where I felt I belonged, I happily resided with him for 3 years on the island Kyushu. In which time he educated me about Shakyamuni (also known as Siddhartha) and his teachings (which have come to be known as Buddhism) as well as the more nonviolent aspects of the martial arts, uses of medicinal herbs, and some poetry.

After 3 years passed, my new father figure had asked if I would accompany him to the capital city of Koguryo, Kugnae. He was very sickly and said he had a matter of business to attend to there, and he didn't think he could make it alone. Upon reaching Kugnae, Shuten asked me to walk with him to the Tree of Reflections. Starring at the tree alongside him, I heard him whisper under his breath "Shizu, I have brought you the son we could never have, now we can both rest in peace." Alarmed, I quickly questioned him as to what he meant. He responded that he could not have children of his own with his deceased wife, Shizu who had been buried in front of the Tree, but that she had never stopped hoping for a son.

After a month of life in Kugnae, my mentor, Shuten, had passed away, leaving only his staff, which he spoke of using only against the most stubborn of ailments in those he would treat. Remembering his love for Shizu, I had buried him next to his wife at the Tree of Reflections, and moved to Buya. I now teach anyone who wishes to learn of Shakyamuni or his teachings, as well as medically aiding those whom I am able.
