My father had been a soldier, instrumental in one of the kingdom's early expansions into Koguryo, and he had been given the small property as a gift from his lord. It was called Dae, the family name, but it is wilderness now. I was not a wise or disciplined youth, unprepared for my when my father died, and this eventually led to the land being deserted by the people. For a while after that I was a vagrant. I believed I could pay for the loss of my father's legacy with my own suffering. Two people helped me take my first steps down the middle road. The first was a stranger, but she told me a riddle, and then I no longer wished to suffer. The second person I met in the north: she called me Fedaykin, and she took my hand and walked me down the path of legends, whereupon I was brought into the Kingdoms and came to live here. I was nineteen then. I learned of a circle in Koguryo where students studied the Eightfold Path, the Buddhist's journey towards inner peace and enlightenment. I spent my days and nights reading from the words of Siddhartha Gautama, studying the teachings and parables in The Wandering Monk. In the winter of Yuri 71 I made my pilgrimage to Koguryo, and there I found a teacher who accepted me into his tutelage. I come and go as wanderers do, and I have had new teachers since then, but I always return in time, and my heart will always be with my friends and family here. --- Fedaykin |
