  Enlightenment

Experiencing a moment of enlightenment does not directly come from reading a book; it is attained when you figure out how the subject you are studying relates to the world, and what purpose it serves in the universe.  Meditating is almost essential to focus your thoughts to this degree, but it does not mean this process is easy.

A simple meditation exercise you could practice could be to ponder this question: How did you come about reading this scroll?  Your first response would probably be that you bought it from the scribe, or you found it on the ground, but that is only the surface answer.  If you found it on the ground, what circumstances lead to it being there?  This would be a whole new branch to your original question.  What about why the scribe sells it? Or, why did the author write this document?

When you experience a moment of enlightenment, a great compassion cannot but arise in your heart because you discovered that you are not the independent being you thought you were as you can see how everything is connected by some mystical force, but directly with everything else.  You are no longer able to view the world in the same way you did before this enlightenment because a great feeling of connection to the world around you radiates from you.

Once you can see how you affect the people around you, positively or negatively, you can better evaluate what your current values are, and what you would like them to be.  By knowing how to see some of these connections, you will much more likely have positive karma, because you understand the connection between a negative act and how it impacts a life.
